Sleep onset time as a mediator in the association between screen exposure and aging

The evening screen delays sleep, and late sleep speeds up ageing.

A study of a link rarely discussed: what screen exposure does to the pace of biological ageing — and by which route. Instead of asking directly, the authors broke the path into stages: screens delay the moment of falling asleep, and delayed sleep onset accelerates ageing measured as the biological age of the retina.

The gap between retinal age and chronological age grew with exposure: from 0.49 years in the lowest-exposure tercile to 5.13 years in the highest. Sleep onset proved the mediating link — not the screen itself but what it does to sleep is what reaches the body.

For this library it is the route by which evening conversations with AI can reach biology: a late screen, shifted sleep, a faster clock. No particular content is needed — only the hour. Caveat: observational; retinal age is an indicator of ageing, not the whole of it.
