From Co-Design to Metacognitive Laziness: Evaluating Generative AI in Vocational Education

Stop watching your own understanding and you stop understanding.

The study concerns a group almost absent from the AI literature — vocational-school learners, whose tasks are practical rather than academic. The authors followed generative AI entering the learning process from the co-design of lessons through everyday use.

The phenomenon they name “metacognitive laziness”: learners stop monitoring their own understanding — checking whether they know, where they are lost, what still needs to be grasped — because the AI seems to do it for them. Metacognition, thinking about one’s own thinking, is what separates learning from copying; when it lapses, learning lapses.

The significance: the effect appears even where the subject is craft and concrete action, not essays and theory. For personal use the lesson is the same — if a machine seems to watch whether I understand, I stop watching myself. Caveat: a preprint; qualitative and descriptive, not a measurement of effect size.
