Your Brain on ChatGPT: Accumulation of Cognitive Debt

A brain that does not write stops remembering what it wrote.
The MIT Media Lab had 54 people write essays under three conditions — LLM only, search engine only, brain only — while recording EEG from 32 electrodes. Some participants returned months later for a fourth session in which the conditions were swapped.
The LLM group showed the weakest and least distributed brain connectivity; the search group intermediate; the brain-only group the strongest. LLM users recalled their own text worst and felt the least ownership. In the fourth session those who moved from LLM to unaided writing still showed weaker connectivity — while those who moved the other way engaged memory and brain networks far more widely.
The authors call it “cognitive debt”: fluency and speed today, repaid later in eroded mental effort and ownership of thought. The caveats are serious and the authors state them: small sample, unreviewed preprint, a single task. A signal, not a verdict — but a signal measured on the brain, not in a questionnaire.
